When my wife had our first child, we entered into a fairly equal parenting pattern from the outset because she was not able to take a lot of time off work and we were, at that time, both working shift work. I feel as though it was foundational for us because it established an equality of roles between us that has continued to this day. Would we have preferred for her to have taken more time off to establish herself as a mother? Absolutely - but the nature of our work and the financial considerations for us at the time didn't allow for a long period of leave for either of us.
