Yeah it’s pretty brutal

Toms recollections of boarding school reminded me of an autobiography by Sir Wilfred Grenfell ("A Labrador Doctor" 1939), in which he recounts his experiences of boarding school in the 1870's. He recalls a fairly brutal upbringing and education that was psychologically and emotionally damaging and I couldn't help but be reminded of Grenfell's experiences when listening to Tom's all these many years later. Aside from the food and the lodgings, it sounds like the psychological aspect of living away from family at boarding school hasn't really changed. It's quite a stark realisation.
