Today was the official first day of the fringe. I did my best to sleep in, after doing the very fun Mr Thing show (like a late night show for kids but for adults, all colours and joy and silly jokes), and knowing I had another late show tonight.
I ate well, and was all prepared for the show, and then the wheels came off. Friday nights can be hard, because a lot of people are tired and drunk and coming out to see a show just for the sake of honouring the going-outness of the Friday night. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it can work out well, but it can make them slow or reluctant to laugh, which makes a Friday night something of a gamble. I mean, more so than any comedy show, because is always a gamble - the alchemy of crowd and performer can be a delicate balance.
Tonight, there were five young men in the audience who were talking to each other throughout. They were enjoying themselves and the show, which actually makes it harder to deal with them, because there is only so many times you can address the chatty elephant in the room before you start looking either mean, or like you can’t control the room. Anyway, it went well apart from that, and the fact that I had a replacement tech in who didn’t know the desk. She was a lovely girl, but I assume something went terribly wrong with the buttons because every lighting cue went missing, as did the house music, so it had a somewhat experimental, Bowie feel.
I feel like the show held together more or less, though, and even the naughty chatting boys seemed to enjoy it, so that’s a hopeful thing. Then I did my late night spot at Dan Muggleton’s Australian Comedy Show, and then went back to my flat and chatted with Laura for a while so now I feel a lot better.
Tomorrow! Well, today now. It’s past midnight and I’m going to have what in Edinburgh constitutes an early night.
