The way work works.

I woke up too early today, and was pretty annoyed with myself. Sleep is important and I’ve gotten into a bad habit of trying to get more things done by waking up and charging into work because it’s that time of year where you can’t really do too much.

That said, yesterday was world fringe day, and my notifications popped this story into my life, which reminds me that the work I do can make a difference. Mostly it’s not providing people with a moment that helps them catalyse a massive life change (or I’d be charging a lot more for my tickets, and I’d probably be illegal). On a smaller scale though, it’s nice to remember that my stuff is *for people*, and they get to use it (or not) as they like, and sometimes they use it to swing for the fences.

You don’t want to get over-ambitious about what comedy can do - it tends to make it less funny. I know I can lean towards idealism about what a precisely articulated idea is capable of doing in the world, if you can figure out how to communicate it in a non-ham-fisted way to someone who wants to hear it. I don’t know.

Basically, this was nice and it made me feel good.

I like to hope so!

I'd say genuinely getting through to people is more important than the quantity of people you get through to on a more superficial level, and you do genuinely cut through.

I’m fairly lucky with hate, aside from YouTube comments which I flat refuse to read as a whole. But certainly the idea that my work is too complicated or not mainstream enough is a thing I struggle with.

You have to take those wins and hold onto them like it’s the last soul on earth. Because every negative comment or shitty tweet, or any other shitty communication is transitory. Positive stories like that are the starfish you threw back into the sea. They might not matter to the vast majority of naysayers, but they matter. Cherish the victories, forget the losses (as if that were possible).
