So I’m back in London after doing the Australian Festivals. Back to the grind of throwing ideas at various gatekeepers and seeing what sticks. It’s an odd feeling because the narrative gatekeeper/commissioner types seem to stick to is “what story are you passionate about telling?” Which is one of those nice sounding questions that seems to mean almost nothing.
I have ideas I’m passionate about, but it seems like a weird farming mentality to suggest every creative is just wandering around with one big story waiting to be juiced out of them by a channel like a piece of fruit. There’s something disposable about artists in that narrative, something that dismisses the power of craft and the power of how someone tells a story.
But also, at this point, I have quite a lot of different things I’d like to get made, and I’d be happy to have development funding for any of them. Also, I’d rather get *something* up than nothing, so meetings seem to be a sort of odd delicate mutual cross examination: “no, what do YOU want to see...”
It’s been a lovely few days of summer weather, which has made adjusting back to London a lot easier, and I did a lot of floppy reading surrounded by wildflowers in the grass at Alexandra Palace the other day but today is properly grim and drippy. Very much the sky telling me to get back to the grind.
