Pre Show Patreon Q&A

ETA: answers are going up in my Instagram stories as a result of having 0 editing time before the show begins.

You should be able to see them even if you don’t have Instagram.

Hallo lovely people.

I’m so pleased that a few more of you can come to the show, and that I was able to turn those last two promoter holds into 6 free slots for you Patreonites through the magic of interior design (telling them to pull a few more chairs into the room).

To say thanks for all the supportive comments and emails in response to the giveaway post, apart from giving away four more tickets than I had intended, I wanted to do a video Q&A.

I’m relearning the (very tightly scripted, heavily techy) ETHOS show for tomorrow. Because I will obviously be turning up at the venue hours before the show to fret (I am that nerd, yes), I figured I might as well film something while I’m a nervous backstage wreck, just before the show.

Ask me anything, below here or in a private message if you’d prefer to keep it anonymous and I’ll try to answer it and put up a video about an hour before the show. It doesn’t need to be show related.

A pre-emptive answer: yes, I am procrastinating.

I noticed that too. Maybe it is because we still feel compelled to offer our input even when we have nothing of value to add? :p

Is it weird that all the people writing questions appear to me men ?

What's your favourite sitcom or sitcoms?

Did you make a deliberate decision to record the show in London, or was it just a matter of convenience and timing?

Following one of your legendary conversations have you ever had a complete reversal of an opinion that you had previously held?

(Of course if you consider either your sense of gender or your sexual preference private you don't have to answer. I understand that you want to keep some aspects of your life separated.)

Paul John Showalter

I think those are both interesting and inter-related factors when it comes to creative work, particularly comedy and podcasting. Especially if you are very straight and very cis, it is interesting to consider these factors. Your work is always well reasoned and insightful (even on the bugle) and it might be illuminating to get your take on that aspect of your work.

Paul John Showalter

To clarify so I can answer properly do you mean my personal sense of gender, or my sexual preference?

Speaking after your experiences with Trilogy: There were a number of (brilliant, effective) things that you were able to do in post-production that are not possible (achievable?) in a live performance (adding voice overs, explanation/expositions & additional voices). Are you thinking about using those techniques in your art again? Can they be intertwined into live performance? Would that be significantly different/more-difficult than a tightly scripted tech-heavy performance?

CrispnCrunch

Are you a consequentialist, even coming from your Buddhist upbringing?

Jay

Does it feel different doing comedy as part of a collaborative effort like The Bugle compared to doing it in your own? Good luck for the recording, it's a great show and you'll do grand!

From a craft point of view, how are you finding the process of relearning Ethos compared to relearning the trilogy?

How do you feel that your gender preference (or lack thereof) influences your work?

Paul John Showalter

Have you ever made a joke you've later regretted? Or had a joke occur to you on the spot, not made it, then later regretted not saying it?

Only sometimes

I'm watching the Williams formula one doc now. In Ethos there's a bit where you mention the bogans arriving in Adelaide for the racing. In Oz and the US Motorsport is working class. In Europe it's always been posh, Ferrari, Monte Carlo, etc. What are your thoughts on how these soft cultural ties, associations and cues develop and influence us? And how important are they? Not necessarily class, that was just an example.

I've not been able to figure this out. Is ETHOS' battery level part of the show?
