They had it easy compared to Gohan. Gohan was in elementary school in his base form fighting Frieza in all his forms on Namek and saw Vegeta, Krillin, and Piccolo get taken out. He was able to keep powering up out of rage. The crazy thing is if Goku would've got taken out he probably would've transformed into the legendary super saiyan out of sheer rage. Then he took a huge nerf after Namek because he was just way too op and that's saying alot because he was strong in the Cell and Buu sagas.
