Poetry vs Comedy
Added 2019-01-16 18:59:41 +0000 UTCI’m doing a gig in Brighton tonight where it’s poets vs comedians. I’m on the comedian team for tonight, which is always a bit of an odd feeling, because I always thought when I was a kid that I’d end up a poet.
Anyway, there are themed rounds, where we have to have stand-up bits on certain topics (the poets have to have poems for the rounds, obvs) and I sat down to write some jokes about science and instead wrote an extremely silly little poem about the division of science and art during the Enlightenment period.

My tiny perspective -- science gives us ways to think about the world but rarely delivers truth (nothing wrong with theories and hypotheses but there's always something that needs to be tweaked) whereas art often delivers truths about the world but can also be used to tell some great fat lies. So a view of the world that's informed by both enables us to say things that can't otherwise be said, and trying to work with one to the exclusion of the other is impoverishing... which is what you said above, much more succinctly than I could manage!
