Day three of Edinburgh (second show, final preview, holy crap my numbering system is getting out of control) was lovely.
I woke up and did a little bit of exercise - some body weight and core stuff. You have no idea how virtuous getting any kind of healthful activity feels in Edinburgh. Other than walking up thousands of stairs every day, it's just not really part of the framework of most days. Making time to do even a couple of flaccid crunches made me feel disproportionately smug.
Then I went in to the Pleasance Dome to watch a play. Courtroom Play: A Courtroom Play was produced by my friend Viv, and written by her partner Jon and directed by my friend Benita. It features the brilliantly funny Thom Tuck, who I've done a bunch of This is Your Trial-s with. It's easy to forget when you're embedded in the standup comedy side of the Fringe that it's also full of funny plays, serious plays, dance, improv, music, circus and basically every form of human live entertainment from amateur knockabout to slick, expensive and internationally acclaimed.
After that, I headed to The Caves, to do a kid's show which I'll be doing every day for the rest of the fringe because why not? It's a gear shift to go from comedy for adults to comedy for kids, and a useful reminder not to get sloppy with your jokes. You can't rely on pop-culture references or shock to do comedy for children, and I'm not good at goofy overblown kids-entertainer style comedy. You also have to remember to entertain the adults in the room, because they're the ones who are actually paying you. So the jokes have to be solidly structured, clean and undeniably funny. It's more of a challenge than you'd think, and good discipline.
After that I found some food, and a taiwanese bubble tea place on Clerk St, which did nice tea and the longest hand-rolls I've ever seen in my life, and then went to do some cleanup work on ETHOS for the second preview. It was a really lovely and delightful show, though I was wiped out afterwards (probably from those crunches in the morning, smug smug). Went home, microwaved myself some dinner like a really classy dame and then decided that instead of putting out a podcast or doing this write-up I would be sensible and go to bed.
Instead of doing that, I alternately chatted with my flatmates and read a book which was a mistake. I need to learn that starting a book at 11pm means I WILL BE AWAKE UNTIL 3am AND THE BOOK IS FINISHED.
Onwards and upwards!
