I completely understand where you're coming from. However, things are not always black and white. There's a lot of grey area in this situation, especially since Paula is most likely bipolar. Convincing someone with mental illness to get help (for their own sake and yours) is not easy, especially when they don't think there's a problem. And it's not as easy to walk away from someone so close to you as your own mother as it is to walk away from a chosen partner. Speaking as someone who has been emotionally abused by my own mother for decades, I think there needs to be room for nuance in certain situations. Cutting people out of your life completely is not always possible.
