Edinblog day 8 & 9: face masks and sellouts.

Yesterday was a day of ups and downs. I hung out with Scott and Bolli (above, beautifying over a cuppa), and went to draw at the National Gallery of Scotland with Phill Jupitus. It's a lovely way to start the day at the festival - relaxed and quiet before the hectic starts. It was a good day.

Also, I sold out my show, AND it was a lovely audience. Then I went to do Smut Slam where they introduced me as a variety act and made me sing a song even though I hadn't brought my banjo.

I truly didn't anticipate filling that big room - I don't know what stars and publicity and flyerers aligned to make it happened but it's a very high point of the festival. I was buzzing all today like a bee who just won a bouquet of delicious flowers. Well, not all day. I had two naps - after watching Laura Davis, John Hastings and Larry Dean nail Late n Live until very early in the morning yesterday. I didn't get home for a cuppa and some sleep til about 4am, which felt like a pretty tame way to rock on to the wee hours. I feel like getting to 4am should involve some dancing. Watching comedy, even very funny comedy doesn't seem raucous enough to invite the shading of dawn across the horizon en route home.

Tonight's crowd was big but also quiet, to the extent that I could tell after the second joke that I was going to have to treat them like I was doing the show for TV and just pause where there should have been laughter to keep the proper rhythm of the show. So that was a salutary return to the land of the working bee.

I have still not found my boots, so have gone online and bought a new pair. I think the lesson of the day is something about balance. Mainly cause the shoes I bought are even higher than the last pair.
