New Teacast: Gillian English

Rape and Football, aggression, storytelling and your responsibility to help other people.

The podcast is up here: http://apple.co/2hw3h6U

I really enjoyed talking with Gillian, and it made me think about my own reluctance to ... not think of myself as, but market myself as a feminist. I think that while my politics are towards the left, I try to avoid labels, almost compulsively.

Maybe it's just my inherent reluctance to be in a gang, or maybe I feel like having a party can stand in the way of genuine conversation - there's a weight of associations that everyone has about any given political stance or group, which can cloud what you're saying with the assumptions they have.

On the other hand, as Gillian mentions, having a support network of like-minded people can give you strength in difficult times. This was a great conversation, and I had a lovely cup of tea during it.

Let me know if you want to have a look at The Resistance, but can't afford the $5 subscription and we'll figure something out.

She's pretty excellent

Even as a feminist, I thought what you said about encouraging enthusiastic consent was good, because it does seem like even though we're in a culture that supposedly encourages sexuality, for women there often seems to be this idea that it's something they give up to a man who takes it, or that they can't have agency they have to "give in" or "be swept away in the moment" or something else like that. And that really seems like it must reinforce rape culture.

Probably what Hen said did influence my choice. I tend to talk about feminist issues on stage more than in the podcast - part of the early eps were influenced by having Sean on, talking about those issues with him felt useful and fresh. Also, I feel like I articulated my opinions relatively clearly and try not to repeat myself tooo much. But henry was right - my aim to talk about difficult ideas is shaped in part by what my audience finds difficult. I don't have too many MRA listeners, so preaching to the converted seems self indulgent.

Also, Gillian was an amazing guest, you should have her on more often! She's badass!

I have no idea if this is 100% due to the weird order I'm listening to Tea With Alice episodes in (a few at the beginning then a few recent ones), but it seemed like you talked more about feminist issues at the beginning then less so after you spoke to your brother who said he found you talking about them dull, and when I listened to this episode you mentioned who that's something you stayed away from. Is this just an artifact of the weird order in which I am listening to your podcast or did you make a decision to move away from discussing feminist issues after that episode with your brother? I admit I may be 100% imagining this correlation, so that's why I'm asking.
