I woke up to help a friend through some Edinburgh heartbreak, and then dragged my sleepy brain along to Sameena Zehra's poetry show, Poetry Can F*ck off. They have their banner in the room, rather than out on the street advertising their show, because some adults complained that their kids could figure out what the word was. This fact entertains and annoys me in equal measure, because the deductive reasoning of the children has to exist on top of prior knowledge of the wicked word, and for fuck's sake, what damage does swearing do to the child mind? I mean, there's an argument for keeping swearing adult so that it stays naughty and impactful and fun. As far as I can tell, that's the only real reason to do it - save a pleasurable thrill of breaking the rules for later in your child's life. From there, I went to the Cult of Comedy, doing a neat 10 minute spot and losing my rain jacket. Ran to do some flyering for Tiff, hauling Jen Carnovale along for an efficient and delightful catchup about relationships and why it is that us lady comics are so willing to talk about and warn one another off the grabby gropey guys, but so unwilling to talk to them or talk publicly about them. The arguments against name and shame always come down to power dynamics in the end. And the fear of being disbelieved. But that's a power dynamics thing in itself. The Resistance was quiet, in terms of numbers but I felt good about the whole thing. Then I literally bolted to my next spot, which started at 9.20 (where the resistance ends at 9.15 on the dot). Then I went and hung out backstage at the BBC Radio Four Extra show, which made me feel very glamorous indeed. I hung out at the Loft Bar (artists bar) for the first time this festival, and then everything started to feel a bit glassy so I headed home. How do people do this festival with drugs and alcohol on top of the whole work side. I'm full of infinite wonder. Oh man! I found my SD card! So podcasts to follow! Alice Xx
