I'm in the kind of cold sweat you get when your email alerts you that you've got a thing in your inbox from the people who tell you about your ticket sales. Will the numbers have moved? Will I feel elated or dashed by the wonky columns my phone refuses to justify, so that every list of ticket sales is like a coded letter to decipher out my incremental victory or defeat? How stressful! It's the hardest bit, because to be realistic (aside from flyering my little heart out), there's nothing I can do to change the outcome. I've done all the things. I've written a show, and I have publicitied as much as the people who make public things will let me be on their things. I wrote a show! The reality is that there's a huge number of shows across the festival, some of them as good as or better than my show. Certainly more famous people. And also Netflix. And the new Superman movie. And staying in with your loved ones. All competing for the person who might or might not decide to buy a ticket to The Resistance. But I wrote a show! At this point, I've just got to lay my show at the feet of the petty and flighty god that is The Audience, and let their whim decide again if this work I do can make a living for me, or if I should throw in the towel and get a real job.
