Upsides, downsides

So, the upside of being at a festival is that I get to meet and talk to a lot of interesting comedians, and try to get them on the podcast. The downside is that I have less time and less reliable wifi, and as I'm in a new city I don't have the same back-to-front knowledge of quiet pod-appropriate places.

It was a rocky start to The Resistance in Adelaide this week, with a sort of comedy-level of equipment malfunctions in the hours running up to Friday's opening. Two printers, an electricity blackout and a torn shirt later, I was at the tech, talking to my tech while tuning my mum's banjo and the machine-head broke. The peg was a bit slippy for a while, and my mum bought the instrument in London more than 30 years ago, so, while this was a shock, it was not entirely an unexpected shock.

It excitingly turns out that the piece of the peg that broke is an obscure British part, difficult to source or repair. On the upside, there is a solution. On the downside, the majority of solutions tend to work along the "pick only two of the fast, cheap, good, triptych."

On the upside, it's all sorted now, and the show is coming together and will soon be a show!

On the downside, some reviewers are turning up, which is actually very annoying, given that the show

isn't quite a show yet. Was tempted to tell my door people to refuse entry to media, but I worried that they had been told to come by someone (my management or PR), and so it would be a bad move to flip a table over the business. That said, i'm definitely not going to be reading reviews til Melbourne. Sorry reviewers.

On the bright side, I got to go to the wedding of my Aggressively Helpful costar and my A Rational Fear co-writer on Saturday. Justine Rogers and Jazz Twemlow are two people I'm very happy to see married, though I imagine if they have kids they'll be terrifyingly smart and articulate and painfully hilarious.

On the other bright side. New SBS articles out, as well as new Pod with Gordon Southern this week.

On the bright-now-diabetes-later side, I ate a giant cloud of fairy floss. I've been off sugar for a few months so it hit me like a tonne of bricks made out of sugar directly to my nerve endings, and I vibrated like a meal-alert buzzer at a pub for about 45 minutes and then got grumpy like a toddler at about midnight and went home.

Keep hanging out with me, punks. I like you.

Comments

I would venture that all these shitty things can be seen as a good omen for the show...unless, of course, I am completely wrong, in which case you should probably ignore this comment. I for one, am looking forward to Sunday night when I get to see The Resistance for myself. Am pretty excited. I'll be sure to stay away from the fairy floss though.
