Fringe Life

Looking at this foot-painting scene from the floor of the fringeworld artist services section of the state library raises a few thoughts for me. First, my legs aren't really this pale, blame the lighting. Secondly and more importantly I'm not sure if I fit in with the whole fringe thing. On one hand, maybe that is the fringe thing - not fitting in to any other category. On the other hand, I don't want to talk to only people who are on the outside. I want to talk to everyone and make everyone realise that we're all on the outside together. Yesterday I did 'The Ashes' at the court hotel at 3.30pm. I'm on the train to do it again today. It's a sort of themed line-up show. The conceit is that it's English acts vs Australian acts, with a laugh-ometer thing, set to cricket style scoring (1,2,3,4,6). Overs are 7 minute sets. It's actually a pretty accurate measure of a performer's strike rate in the room, and I like doing it. It reminds me that I can do that kind of comedy as well - that's a hard skill and my ongoing fear is of accidentally fooling myself into believing I'm doing the harder job by doing "more than just laughs" when in fact, doing less. I've yet to see the mop girls show, but I think I will. I'll pay for tickets too, instead of going in on my artist pass. That kind of effort deserves a reward, and mops don't pay for themselves.
