Hi Patreons
Welcome back post hiatus!
It's been a big month. A couple of SBS articles, and starting to write my new show, as well as some other projects that I'll tell you about if I get my Sh-t together enough to actually make them happen.
I've been making decisions about the shape of next year, as Australian based comedians do at around this time. The year's round is done, and people start to say "last year" about Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 and "this year" about Melbourne 2016.
This funny alternate calendar has become meaningful for me this year for the first time for two reasons. The first is that this was the first year I threw myself into the festival round- in order: Perth Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, MICF, Canberra Comefy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Edinburgh, Sydney Fringe, Melbourne Fringe and then rest.
The second reason is that applications for the next year fall due in October, which is when my mother died. An artificial reminder to look forward feels pretty rough right now, but I can imagine that for the rest of my life it'll be pretty useful.
I did Wil Anderson's podcast last week, which was lovely. Wil's one of those people who I feel uncomfortable hassling, because I know how busy he is. It made me really happy that he wanted me on his podcast, mainly because it's nice to know that someone likes you enough to spend an hour or so in your company. Also, Wil is generally friendly-but-busy in the way that people are when they either like you but are actually really busy, or hate you and are actually really trying to get away.
I nervously wrote some notes on the bus en route to his house, and showed up, to meet his ridiculous snuffly friendly dogs, and his aloof cats. We ended up talking for about two hours, and I didn't get to any of my notes, so probably a good conversation. Look it up, if you're a Tea With Alice fan & let Wil know you liked it. #wilosophy
I'll be trying to get him over tea some time in the next few weeks for your listening pleasure.
Welcome back.
