Hozier Analysis- "Work Song"

I discuss the use of diction, alliteration, symbolism and possible metaphor in this track by Hozier. I also discuss the motifs found throughout the album so far.

I totally understand what you mean. The use of the word "crib" still just strange to me. Like yes, I also think "walls" here is sexual. I agree that he physically wants to feel (and fill, I suppose) her. But why the use of the word, "crib"? Is it just meant to connect us to the idea of a woman's uterus and not just her vagina (as "walls" indicates)? If so...why? Why bring the notion of motherhood into this at all if not to serve as a metaphor for how the subject "mothers" the speaker in some way?

I’ve always interpreted the crib line as going hand in hand with the walls line as a sexual innuendo. Walls as in her and noting in her room but an empty crib meaning that uterus be empty lol but like also like implying the want for the β€œcrib” to be filled if that makes sense? Idk that’s what I think it means

i take the title work song because i see it as an anthem for our speaker to keep going through the hardships of life. a lot of working class people put in the hard work that they do because the people they provide are waiting at home. and so it's like this motivation that the people we love are taken care of, and in turn they also take care of us. i feel like hozier is trying to reflect that and contain it in this small cocoon of our speaker's life. also another point that you made is about how hozier likes to mix in religious experience with love and sex. somebody mentioned this in a comment before, but hozier has a lot of lesbian fans for a male artist, and i think he shows the reason why multiple times. it's not only the female gaze-y way he writes, but forsaking institutional religion in order to choose love is something a lot of queer people can relate to. combine that with the way he describes women, and you got yourself a bunch of lesbians listening to your music

Interesting! I hadn't thought of that! Thank you!

This is one of my favorite Hozier songs! I kind of think the title could be referencing how much work this relationship is for the subject. In the beginning, the speaker says that all of these boys are running on empty but he is sustained by his baby. Then he goes on to describe all of the ways that she has cared for him through this dark period.
