Punisher Analysis- "ICU"

I discuss the use of diction, imagery, irony, and more in this Punisher track by Phoebe Bridgers. I also make connections regarding some of the themes and motifs found throughout the album.

I can't wait ❤️❤️❤️

This is super interesting, Erin! Thank you for sharing this! For me, though, the word dystopian holds a lot of weight. Dystopian isn't just not perfect. Dystopian implies oppression and suffering of an apocalyptic scale. It implies doom. The attitude of, "If I open myself up, doom will inevitably come" is not a super hopeful one in this context and certainly not a huge step forward for the speaker of the song. If anything, it seems to connect right back to the beginning of the song and even to sentiments feelings in other songs on the album. I do agree with you, though, that the act of leaving the window open in and of itself is a hopeful one.

I think the ending still feels hopeful, though. If we equate the speaker to the closed-off house, unable to let herself display her feelings, then her entering the window seems like an "I'm not going to give up, I'm going to try to be open to feelings and vulnerability" move. And then her leaving the window open and letting herself be bathed in the morning light is an act of opening herself up, being vulnerable, even if it's potentially going to be "dystopian" and painful. Even if it's not perfect ("I can see the brush strokes," "I hate your mom"), morning light pouring in is morning light pouring in.

Yess! Next song is a bit slower but it has a pretty twang that I think you’re really going to like :)

This is a good explanation because it connects back to her fear at the beginning of the song. At the beginning, the speaker shares this fear of feeling anything good. She basically says if anything good happens, it won't last or it'll be followed by this inevitable doom. So at the end, it would make sense that the light (a good thing) is made negative somehow by the word "dystopian".

Thank you so much. I guess the name change does make sense in the context of the pandemic.

English Teacher KP

Haha, I love that! Also, thank you for the context about being drunk and locked outside. That really helps. I definitely caught on that she was locked out and thinking about everything in the song, but it makes more sense now why she was locked out.

So glad you enjoyed it! Can't wait!

loved this video! I'm so excited to see your reaction to "Graceland Too", it's definitely my favorite sound-wise!

phoebe used to date her drummer so you’re probably right about that drums line being about one specific person lol.
here’s something phoebe said about the last verse on twitter:
“when you’re locked out of your house but you’re too drunk to care, you know eventually you’ll have to break in but it isn’t urgent. it’s a continuation of the first verse, so in theory the whole song takes place in my head while I’m drunk on the lawn”
(so you’re completely correct with what you said!) also she said that the I hate your mum line is about her getting in a fight with her ex’s mum (who is a trump supporter) at whole foods lmao

The whole ICU - I see you thing was caused by the pandemic, which is the time the song came out. ICU was supposed to be the name but they changed it out of respect because of the situation. They changed the name back to ICU on the album after some time I think (and it's the name on the physical albums as well as on streaming) but the name of the single is still I see you. It's confusing but it's the same song.

You do have the right song, don’t worry. For the dystopian light line, I think it's referring to the “you” in the song. Phoebe says, “I used to light you up.” “You” make me feel something, but if you’re a painting, I’m standing too close, and I can see all the flaws. I think the dystopian light refers to this wonderful feeling she’s having for the first time, but ends up being painful or dystopian.
