Inside the Erotic Cartoonist's Studio (10): Special Anne-Marie Series. Season Finale Video.

*Transcription

Hello watchers! Welcome to the final installment of the Inside the Erotic Cartoonist’s Studio series! But don't worry, we'll be back in September with more exciting behind-the-scenes content. And stay tuned for something special and experimental coming this summer—more details coming soon.

Today, I want to dedicate this video to the "Anne-Marie" series as a special tribute to celebrate the completion of the recoloring process and the eagerly awaited printed English edition of the series. The characters of "Anne-Marie" hold a special place in my heart and continue to inspire me, even as I work on other comics. So, let's dive into this special video!

Character Insights

I must share the story of how Jezzabel Avery came into existence once more, as it was truly a moment of divine inspiration. It happened on a stormy night at the end of summer, while I was alone at home grappling with an existential crisis. Suddenly, between the roar of thunder, an image of a woman flashed in my mind. She had an air of wicked laughter about her, and I could see her clearly behind the wheel of her ship, her long black hair billowing in the wind. It was as if she had stepped out of the storm itself and into my consciousness. She introduced herself as Jezzabel, and in that moment, I knew she had chosen me as her creator.

You know how headstrong she is. I can't claim to have given her a dramatic life – she's done that all on her own. I've simply listened to her demands and surrendered to her will. Of course!

Anne was crafted as the antithesis of Jezzabel, a deliberate contrast between angel and demon. In fiction, opposing characters like them often complement each other, offering diverse perspectives on the narrative. This contrast is essential. However, I must confess, in reality, I see Jezzy and Anne as my alter egos, each representing different aspects of my personality that ultimately converge at a midpoint. I believe it's crucial for characters to evolve throughout the story, just as real people do through their experiences. I start by giving each character a sexual peculiarity and then encourage them to question their encounters. Was it enjoyable? Too intense, perhaps? Boring? Romantic? It's not merely about illustrating a sex scene; it's about capturing the emotions and exploring the consequences. Once the character's development feels consistent, I can confidently move on to the next scene.

Tommy the Hammer and Lieutenant represent opposites as well. One embodies the charming prince archetype, while the other is the rough, rude pirate. It's a twist on the traditional tale, where the princess prefers the adventurous life with the fierce female pirate over being rescued by the charming prince. As for poor Lieutenant, I believe I finally struck a fair deal for him. Don't you think?

The case of Janah is quite intriguing because she wasn't originally meant to be a central character. She emerged as Anne's antagonist, a reflection of her but with distinct differences – day and night, sweet and spicy, white pearl and black pearl. Originally, her role was simply to create obstacles for Anne, but she quickly seized the spotlight. From her very first page, she exuded a captivating allure. What a girl! Interestingly, she also embodies aspects of my own multiple alter egos. I believe characters must stem from within the creator – perhaps as an alter ego, a feeling, or a memory. Without this connection, they lack authenticity and depth.

Fun Facts and Personal Reflections

Perhaps you're wondering why the comic series is titled 'Anne-Marie', even though the central character is the pirate Jezzabel Avery. The title originates from Anne being treated as a sex object throughout the initial chapters, and in the end, Jezzabel reveals her name: Anne-Marie. Through this, Jezzabel acknowledges Anne as a cherished individual. In hindsight, I should have considered changing the title after the first part to enhance its visibility online. Originally envisioned as a shorter story, around 50 pages, the narrative expanded to nearly 200 pages. However, I opted to remain true to the original message and retained the title.

This comic project has been a journey spanning many years. It all began with a suggestion from an erotic Spanish publisher for their magazine. At that time, fresh out of comic school, I was still finding my footing. Despite not initially considering a focus on eroticism, I decided to give it a chance. In 2006, I began sketching the main characters of "Anne-Marie" and created the first pages. I incorporated numerous sexy scenes, believing them to be somewhat conventional in an attempt to cater to the publisher's preferences. Looking back, I now realize my approach was quite wild.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the comic wasn't selected for the magazine. In those years, the majority of readers for such publications were male, and the publisher felt that "Anne-Marie" was too feminine for their audience's taste. Times have certainly changed. Undeterred, I made the decision to continue the story on my own terms. I removed all restrictions and made it a more personal project. I began publishing it as a webcomic on Spanish websites and on an international comic platform where users translated it into other languages.

The "Anne-Marie" series has endured numerous challenges and a prolonged hiatus of five years. However, as they say, crises often build resilience. Through the dedication and hard work invested during the initial years—often stealing precious hours from sleep and balancing it with a demanding office job—"Anne-Marie" managed to transcend borders and capture the attention of interested publishers. This provided me with the motivation needed to conclude the adventures of Anne and Jezzabel and take the leap towards realizing my destiny as a professional cartoonist.

Ah, the bittersweet pang of reflection! Indeed, I must admit to a twinge of melancholy when contemplating the evolution of my artistic style over the years. Despite my best efforts to maintain consistency, change is inevitable, especially for us cartoonists—living, breathing creatures of creative evolution. While I can acknowledge that my current artwork boasts a touch more realism and perhaps a more identifiable flair, there's a part of me that feels a fond nostalgia for the youthful, albeit clumsy, cartoonist I once was. Nevertheless, fueled by this sentiment, I embarked on the monumental task of recoloring 100 vintage pages within a tight timeframe, all in a bid to achieve a unified aesthetic throughout the series. And you know what? It turned out splendidly! Now, with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, I can finally catch some well-deserved rest and turn my gaze towards my current comic projects and those yet to come.

In summary, I'm incredibly grateful to the "Anne-Marie" series. It has been my constant companion on this artistic journey, guiding me through growth and evolution as a cartoonist. Through its adventures, I've achieved milestones I once only dreamed of, such as making a living from my art and seeing my work published in multiple languages—Well, for now, it's just two languages, but who knows what the future holds? Time to time.

Thank you, Jezzy, for your indomitable spirit! You'll forever hold a special place in my heart!

Great news!

Dante Remy

Absolutely! I've already signed with a Spanish publisher, but unfortunately, they've had to postpone the publication of "Anne-Marie" due to some economic challenges they're facing. Meanwhile, I'm actively seeking opportunities with Italian and German publishers, and who knows, maybe even Japanese ones! After all, the whole world is my oyster, right? :D

What an amazing journey! The recoloring is so consistent and seems like a way to revisit the entire series in a new way. Two languages? French and English? It seems like a publisher could produce a Spanish version efficiently, given the layout it already set up, don't you think? Maybe that's Anne-Marie's next adventure!
