Sour Analysis- "Deja Vu"

I discuss Olivia Rodrigo's use of diction, imagery, alliteration and more in this heartfelt song! I also discuss the tone throughout "Deja Vu" and how our speaker uses the phenomena of deja vu to express her realizations regarding the aftermath of her recent breakup.

Yes to all of this! I love that she is calling him out while also realizing the way things were. So much growth for the speaker!

Great observation!

I like that you pointed out how naive the realization that everything in a relationship is "reused" is, because it's another element of this album that's quintessentially teenager: this album is like a record of a stereotypical first break up, a catalogue of all the things you learn about yourself and life during that experience. Additionally, i think this song is Olivia realizing that all these things that she thought were special and organic and unique were actually calculated moves this guy was making to win her over, things he "knew would work" because they work every time. She was young and naive enough to not realize he knew what he was doing, and this is her calling him out for taking advantage of her innocence. Great analysis as usual!

If you listen closely after she talks about saying I love you in between the chorus and the verse she whispers β€œI love you”. What makes it even better is that this happens in between the chorus and the verse. Even more deja vu!
