Sour Analysis- "1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back"

A bit dark, but for me β€œI’d leave you, but the rollercoaster’s all I’ve ever had” as a domestic violence survivor, I have reallyy related to this line in my life.

This! It's so hard to explain to people who haven't been around hundreds of teens before, but teenagers really are so refreshing in this regard. They don't yet have the capacity (for the most part) to hold back their intense emotions. They feel every single emotion with intensity! This album definitely reminds me of that, too!

Thank you so much!

Love your analysis! This is one of my favorites off of Sour. I used to teach high school as well, and I agree with your points about teenagers and how they feel. That was one of my favorite things about them. They feel everything so deeply and passionately because they haven’t been burdened with crippling self awareness yet. This whole album reminds me of that. ❀️

Excellent analysis as usual :))

Not confusing at all! This honestly makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing!

I love the roller coaster line and agree with your interpretation of it! To add, when I first heard it, I took it as it being what the speaker had already experienced or witnessed, not only in their relationship(s) but others around them. For example, maybe the speaker's parents or other family had a relationship similar to a "roller coaster". This would be why the speaker accepts their own relationship for what it is, because "it's all I ever had", and therefore A) in a way comforting because they know how it goes and/or B) They know nothing else and aren't sure it's worth getting off of the ride (leaving the relationship). I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well, so sorry for any confusion!

I didn't know this, but I can definitely hear it now! Thanks for watching!

I love your videos so Much!! I was waiting for you to realize that the chords were from the Taylor Swift β€œNew Years Day” 🀣 love your analysis so much!

If the piano in this song sounds familiar to you it's cause it borrows from Taylor Swifts New Year's Day! Taylor actually gave Olivia permission, and has writing credits on the song <3 One of my favs
