Melodrama Analysis- Supercut"

I discuss Lorde's use of diction, alliteration, imagery and details in this absolute bop! I also discuss some of the allusions to the rest of the album, as well as some of the overall themes of the album thus far.

Melodrama Analysis- Supercut"

I loved this video! one thing you missed at the end was that the backing vocals echo every few words of the chorus creating a new line: 'all the moments in the dark were wild, florescent in my heart'. That is so interesting to me! the parts of the relationship that were 'in the dark' were the brightest and wildest parts for her, and that is what is being remembered constantly.

my favorite Lorde song ever! if you haven’t seen it already, go watch the first 10ish minutes of the movie Someone Great on Netflix (it’s actually the movie Taylor wrote Death By a Thousand Cuts about). this song plays in the beginning and plays a reel of a relationship and it’s SO GOOD

Oh wow! I did not notice that, but thank you so much for pointing it out! It definitely adds another layer of meaning!

Can't wait!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! I know that you usually only talk about the lyrics but I just wanted to point out the piano part in Supercut. I'm not sure if you noticed or not but she uses the same piano part for this one that she uses for the chorus of Green Light when she sings the lyrics "cause honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go....Wish I could get my things and just let go" To me, I kind of think of the piano from Green Light as the soundtrack to the Supercut of their relationship that she can't stop playing and it makes Supercut feel like a continuation of Green Light and a deeper look into how she desperately wishes she could just let go. That kind of just emphasizes everything that you just said but I love how when I hear that piano it takes me right back to the start of the story and how even after 8 songs we still really havent moved passed where we started. I can't wait for the last two and how the story all comes together!

I agree! Those definitely feel like the final songs of the album with Perfect Places being like what plays during the credits

One of my favorites! I’m so excited for the reprise of Liability, it’s also one of my favorites ❤️

I’m so happy you are okay and that you liked this song. I will always be obsessed at how perfect the placement of this song is storytelling wise. For me “Supercut + Liability (Reprise)” is the last song of the album and Perfect Places is the song that plays in the end credits. Because… in the song Lorde says she plays a supercut of this relationship in her head, but it is also what she’s been doing with the Melodrama album ! She chose the parts of the relationship she wanted to talk about and then created Melodrama: a curated version of the relationship. One that she can always come back to and that encapsulates that moment of her life, but one that just like a supercut cannot express the whole thing. It’s just parts of it. And the fact that it comes so late in the album, … she already expressed her anger, her insecurities, her longing, and now she gets to look back at it. For me this song represents that moment when you have to appreciate things for what they were and then let them go. Being at peace with that. Ready to move on. (As expressed in Liabily (reprise)) Thank you so much for another great Englishy analysis !

Adorado

looveee this song <3 and I love seeing your journey with lorde and her weirdness haha. one of the reasons I rlly love lorde is her uniqueness and ability to be free with her art. I recently went to her concert for the solar power tour and it was truly breathtaking experiencing her and this song live. I felt completely reborn after. Can't wait for the next two songs ! keep doing you kp <3

The ribbons!! I love the repeated image of the ribbons. It evokes the image that the events of “Sober” are PART of the supercut she’s picturing! So so so cool she’s such a genius. Your videos have REALLY made me take another look at all the connections between the songs on this album. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, dancing to it at her show was one of the best concert moments I’ve ever had!!

I really enjoyed it! The "come home to my heart" line got to me as well! So heartbreaking!

English Teacher KP

That is super interesting! Thanks for that info! The mind is a fascinating thing!

English Teacher KP

100% agree with you regarding the repetition! Thank you so much for watching ❤❤❤

Thanks for informing me what a supercut is in the acting / filmmaking world, i never bothered to look it up, although i got the general idea from this song! The thing you mentioned about magic: i definitely agree, magic is everywhere and in everything, especially within science. I'm glad you're feeling better! Thanks for this analysis :)

Thank you so much for this analysis, Teacher KP! Supercut is one of my faves from Melodrama - I love the combination of the upbeat sound and the wistful/nostalgic/passionate lyrics and tone! I’m so glad you enjoyed as well. I feel like the repetition of the bridge (“In my head I do everything right…”) is significant and parallels how she keeps replaying her memories of this relationship, almost like she is in this never-ending cycle of remembering the relationship. Thank you again & please take care 💗

i loove this song so much the lines "i'll be your quiet afternoon crush, be your violent overnight rush" and "come home to my heart" have stuck with me ever since i heard them for the first time and her vocal delivery during the bridge (?) or last chorus or whatever it is is honestly so soul crushing! ps: since your next video might the last one for this album (not sure if the liability reprise is going to be a separate video) i thought this would be interesting to know: with lorde's first album the very first line of the album and the last line are related, the first line being "don't you think that it's boring how people talk?" and the last line being "let 'em talk" and she did something very similar with this album, connecting the first line of the first song and the last line of the last song. i thought i'd let you know since it's probably not something most people would pick up on but i think it's such a great detail to note! lorde's attention to detail is really amazing and i love how this adds to the albums story telling and cohesiveness! so you might want to listen to the beginning of the first song again before you go into the next reaction if you're interested lol i'm so glad you liked this song! i figured you would since it's more upbeat and lyrically intriguing! another great video xx

kind of unrelated to most of this video but google aphantasia and look at the images! it's the thing you talked about in the beginning of the video where some people can't create mental images. there are different stages of it, some people can't imagine anything and some people have very vivid mental images (like you it seems!) mostly unrelated to the song but super interesting haha!
