Melodrama Analysis: Part III- "Homemade Dynamite"

I discuss Lorde's use of diction, imagery, symbolism, characterization and more in this ABSOLUTE BOP!

Note- I do think this song, in particular, lends itself to various interpretations due to the uses of irony and contrast throughout. This video merely represents my interpretation.

I REALLY like this explanation! It makes perfect sense! Thank you so much!

This is a really great point! I should have done an album title analysis! Thanks so much for pointing this out!

English Teacher KP

Not sure if a title can be a motif, but I think the melodramatic tendencies, views, and outlooks of teenagers when they’re in love and experiencing all these emotions for the first time in their lives is definitely consistent throughout the album.

I love your reactions! Thank you for what you do. I wondered if the fact that we can’t tell the difference in sarcasm or sincerity in “know I think your awesome, right” and the prior line is true to life where, we often don’t know if someone is being truthful or sincere, and maybe that is the lie she is telling the other person, but they don’t know how true it is yet

Thank you for the reaction, KP! I appreciate you doing a combination of blind/non-blind reactions for this album. The next song, The Louvre, is my favorite Lorde song. Can’t wait to see your reaction! Would love if this one could be a blind reaction/analysis. I think you’d have a lot of fun with it! :)

Thank you so much for watching!

I'm also super excited for The Louvre, it's one of the most beautiful songs I know, in my opinion. It's not exactly the type of music you like, KP, based on what you've told us, but it tells an absolutely beautiful story, and I'm excited to see your reaction to it! As for this one, I think it's definitely one of the more upbeat songs on this album, but I love how it highlights the danger of starting a reckless, undefined relationship with someone like this, and of partying recklessly. I like the comparison between the car crash imagery and the idea of dynamite: like Lorde is telling us this is going to end up exploding one way or another. Also! thinking about this, a car can be used to get away, so it's almost like she's saying whether they try to run or not it's still going to end with a mess. Always love your analyses!

Hi there! Thanks so much for watching! I actually don't disagree with you about the flashback! That's kind of how I see it so far as well! What's throwing you exactly?

English Teacher KP

Ok, so I always had a certain vision when it came to this album, but the way you and others have interpreted it have thrown me WAY off lol. I always saw this album as a flashback. I though that Greenlight was present day, and then she takes on a journey as to how her and this person have gotten to this point where they’re at such odds with each other. So we go from “ordering different drinks at the same bar” in Greenlight, to the beginning of the relationship in Sober where everything is fun and reckless, and they’re partying all together with their friends “our friends”. And I always thought was the reason why she gets so pissed off in Greenlight when he lies about liking the beach to this new person, because she recognises that phase of the relationship with this person, as shown in this song “tell you all my best lies”. And then I thought the rest of the album was was showing us how it all breaks down, which is what I thought Sober, and this song was always hinting at. They’re in the honeymoon phase, but they know it won’t last forever. I won’t get into the details of the rest of the album, but that’s always been my interpretation of it :).

OMG! That's awesome! I love that play so much!

Thank you! I can't wait!

SO EXCITED FOR THE LOUVRE. It's my favourite song. because the sound and the lyrics just capture that perfect feeling of sun soaked dumbness of having a crush and being freshly in love. Btw the Louvre has a long instrumental outro, just thought I'd let u know if u decide to do a blind reaction to that one. <3 loving these vids

ky

this song reminds of me of going to parties and just making the worst decisions you could make that night because, well, you're with your friends and you're drinking, so u get inspired to just be really destructive in order to have a good time and being blinded by the (Melo)drama of it all (especially when you're a young adult, which lorde was when making this album and I think it's rlly important to the themes and feelings of the album cause everything just feels sooooo monumental to your life haha– I say as a young adult). Also Lordes fav Shakespeare play is A Midsummers Night Dream, so there are references it to it throughout her work !!

I'm really excited!

English Teacher KP

I think The Louvre is next and I’m so excited for it ! I hadn’t realised (until you mentioned it) about all the drugs and intoxication themes across the album ! Hard feelings and Supercut are other songs I think you’re going to enjoy a lot.

Adorado

Thank you! I will do a little bit of both from here on out!

English Teacher KP

I actually prefer you not going in blind and that was especially reinforced seeing you get excited over things you really liked!! But I understand you have to satisfy other people :) just thought I’d let you know

I enjoyed this one a lot!

English Teacher KP

One of my favs on melodrama!! Exited for Supercut, hard feelings and perfect places in the future

I really enjoyed this! I do think this song, in particular, lends itself to various interpretations due to the uses of irony and contrast throughout. This video merely represents my interpretation. I'm excited to see what you all have to add!
