Melodrama Analysis: Part I- "Green Light"

I discuss Lorde's use of diction, imagery, alliteration and symbolism in the first Melodrama track, "Green Light".

Also, thank you Grace for pointing out the "Great White" wordplay! We love a good pun!

Melodrama Analysis: Part I- "Green Light"

Comments

First of all, i got into patreon just to watch this. Love your analysis and melodrama is my favorite album ever. Haha. When she sung this one she said "this not just any song, this song is special. Cause this song, this song has joy in it, jealousy in it, pain in it, pettiness in it, craziness in it..." and I loved that she said pettiness. You can definitely this is a song full of pettiness. What I get from this is that in between moment where you know you have to move on but you still resenting what happen. I think the key for this song is when the chorus switches from "Honey I'll come get my things but I cant let go" to "Oh, I wish I could get my thing and just let go...". Again, diction. The perfect diction. Also the last thing the chrous sounds, when the line changes from Ill come to I wish I could... not only the music but the way she says it changes so dramatically from a total intense tone that she uses during the chorus to a vulnerable voice. It amazes me every time.

The blind reactions are also really fun to watch. Maybe you could listen to it once through and then a second for analysis but film it all. Then we’d still see you theorize subject based on the title before hearing it. I know that might be too much though so whatever you choose is great!

The only track that I think you should do a blind reaction to is Liability! It’s my absolute favorite track on the album, and a blind reaction will make you appreciate it more and give even more of an impact to you of the track.

Oooooh, I think you're right! The word "that" does seem significant!

Now that I realize it's a pun that went totally over my head, I am very impressed for sure! Thanks so much for watching!

❤❤❤

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm not familiar enough with New Girl to get the connection, but I love that you are! Thanks for watching!

English Teacher KP

anyone else not able to listen to this song without thinking about the scene in New Girl? this analysis helped me connect the two so well, thank you ☺️

Emma Laudermilch

absolutely adore this album and so excited for your reactions to it! also i personally love blind reactions but i think you should do whatever's best for you or what you feel most comfortable doing xxx

I was just about to comment on the “great white” word play, I find it genius! It just occurred to me that in the chorus the use of “that” before “green light” makes me wonder if she’s referring to the green light the subject already had because it seems this person has moved on already. I can picture this sort of argument and this being thrown out like “yeah, that green light you had, I want that”. Lorde is an amazing artist and I’m so thrilled to watch your analysis! Thank you for that!

This is one of my favorite songs!! I’ve always loved the Great Whites line, it’s so smart!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it ❤❤❤

English Teacher KP

Also bless your heart for doing an analysis of ME! because tbh that is one of my least favorite songs ever but i love your videos so much i will still watch! Maybe I'll end up appreciating more after your analysis haha

Lindsay Bennett

Yay i loved every second of this. So important that you're doing it in order. I would love to hear any overall motifs you catch along the way as you go through the album. The blind reactions are always fun, but i also think it's great when you've listened once through already and then analyze on the second listen. Like you said, you're able to pick up even more. Either way, you should do whatever you want but i am cool with you listening beforehand :)

Lindsay Bennett

Thanks Grace for pointing out the fun wordplay with "Great White"! We love a good pun!

English Teacher KP

"White lies" is a really interesting concept that would totally work here! I love a good pun!

English Teacher KP

Oh good! Some albums need to be played it order!

English Teacher KP

also really glad you're going in order, this album has some reprises and two part songs that make it really important to not go out of order it's a very concise 11 track concept album i never play it on shuffle!

Grace

obsessed with the word play in this song. i feel like the first verse with the sharks wasn't actually too different from the second verse with those rumors have big teeth. in the full context "you're such a damn liar, well those great whites have big teeth, hope they bite you!" all i can think of is "white lies" in the place, like great big white lies having teeth and that she hopes they come back to bite them. i actually don't think i ever thought she was talking about sharks lol
