I would do a universe in which earthlings and saiyans are are pretty much equal in power and potential (transformations and all) fighting together to defeat the variants of Frieza, Cell, Buu and other villans in their universe. Their dragon balls were destroyed in their last big battle alongside the saiyans (they sacrificed their lives to beat the enemy) leaving the earthings trying to get another universe dragon balls to brings them back. The main character of that universe is a bad ass Yamcha variant who has recently learned Hakai energy from his aventures on that universe and training with a Beerus type variant.

The 5 strongest(except for the grand priest) are all dynamic characters who have changed throughout the story. Of course, the main characters still do have plot armor, but the plot armor happens in conformity with the nature of each character who is involved, such is when the Grand Priest bought Goku back. A story like this your audience enjoys beyond a surface level as the artist rewards the characters who demonstrate redeemable qualities, topping it off with a theme at the end of each story.
