Redoing the Jellybean Saga: Part 3
Added 2021-10-28 08:05:47 +0000 UTCPart one is finished! It took me a slightly disheartening two solid days of work to get through all the linework. I thought about posting progress while I did lines, but I didn't have much to say about it. Here it is!

I am VERY happy with the outcome! I think Courtney's expressions and poses are especially nice. I love that final panel, and it's a good one to side-by-side with the old one --

Even though it's the exact same pose and panel composition, you can see so much improvement in line quality and care. (And I know I've said it before, but. Those jellybeans.. Man.) I couldn't salvage the original Courtney doodle, so my lovely girlfriend drew the new one.
Charging forward into Page 2!
I did decide once again to add some panels, but there's no extra dialogue or anything this time. I'm just giving myself a little more room. Just so it's fresh in your minds, here is the original page 2:

While I like the fun shape of the original first 3 panels, it didn't leave me enough room for my text. I had a big problem back here about letting my speech bubbles be an afterthought, and a lot of times they would end up looking crowded in.

This time we'll just do a close up on the hand, and leave that space on the side to accommodate our text. The original illustration can stay-- I'm not mad at it.

These next two panels I'm excited for, because I love the little bit of motion we get with Courtney closing her fist around the jellybeans! It really feels like we watch her make the decision to eat them, through more than just a facial expression. The way her eyes shift to the left helps, too.
I spent some special time on Courtney's pose in this next panel, trying to make it more obvious what she's supposed to be doing, but I had more trouble with Cecily's legs. I always struggle making these characters look like they're in motion / walking.
First I did this,

... But it's awkward, and she's not even walking the right direction. So I did this,

... But now she's just weirdly standing there. So, I decided I would really put the extra effort in and try to do some perspective on the shoes, which ended up looking....

... Worse than either of the other two did. SIGH! Oh well. I think I'm sticking with this one anyway.
