Redoing the Jellybean Saga: Part 2
Added 2021-10-26 00:27:58 +0000 UTCHere we are again! From here forward I'm gonna tackle these one page at a time, so for starters we're doing Page 1 of the Jellybean Saga.
I did decide that I wanted to change up the paneling a bit and add a few more. In the first few panels, I'll have Courtney look happily at her present from Cecily (the big jellybean jar)

Then she'll ask Cecily to come over to her, but Cecily is distracted by her book.

Courtney pouts at that, then says "You think you're some kinda math genius, huh?"

And from there forward, it'll be the same as the original.
So here's the new paneling:

With that figured out, next on the agenda is designing that kitchen. It can be a delicate balance between too little detail and too much detail -- you don't want it to look so simple that it looks lazy, but the original first panel is an example of how bizarre it looks when a background is way more detailed than it needs to be.

(You'll also notice that I flipped the composition around from the original -- I did this because I thought it would work better with the dialogue I had planned.)
I chose really neutral colors for the kitchen background, because I didn't want it to be distracting, and I didn't want it to clash with the bright pink of that giant jellybean jar. After playing around for a while, this is what I have:

This MIGHT be bordering on a little too simple, but once the characters and the speech bubbles are in place, I think it'll look good! There's enough detail to recognize that it's a kitchen, but your eye goes immediately to the big jelly bean jar.
The next step will be cleaning up Courtney's poses, and once that's done I can start lining! Hooray! I hope the next two are as unexpectedly easy as this one....
Oh, and one more thing:

SUCH an improvement! What even were those horrible original piles!? Where did I GET those!?
