We crossed 40k!
Added 2023-06-19 01:00:26 +0000 UTCI am very happy to announce that we crossed the 40k user mark this week! I had no idea this project I initially started for myself would get so big, so thank you all. It means a lot that you all find my work useful.
Server stuff
Since my last post, I added a new server to handle the load and just like the previous one, it is 100% powered by renewable energy. I also made a change so that multiple servers can now answer web requests, which did bring down the errors you could see sometime when trying to view a profile or a tweet. We are now up to 5 servers + a cloud database.
New features
Now, images that have a textual description/alt-text on Twitter will be replicated with it. There isn't a culture on twitter of having those, but was quite sad to lose them when we have them! I am always happy to add accessibility features. If there are other ways bird.makeup can work better for you, please let me know.
Bird.makeup also has a new beta feature that will highlight if an account you are trying to follow already has an account on the fediverse. You can see it in action with Greta Thunberg and Mark Ruffalo. This is powered by the data in Wikipedia through Wikidata. For the more technically inclined among you, there is a README in the git repo that describe the design goals of this project, and how you can contribute. Please ask away about that, your questions and answer will be added to the readme. If you have feedback about how this data can be better displayed, that would be great too.

Deutschland Vorwärts! Deutschland Ich bin jetzt zum dritten mal auf twitter gesperrt, dieses mal wohl dauerhaft. Ich verliere damit viele Unterstützer und auch Freunde. Man hat mich mundtot gemacht, ich kann nichts mehr liken, nichts mehr teilen und nichts kommentieren. Für twitter X, bin ich tot. Ok, es ist nicht schlimm, ich habe ja Mastodon und euch, aber mich schmerzt es sehr, dass auch meine persönlichen Nachrichten, nicht mehr aufrufbar sind. Twitter X hat mir einige, sehr enge Freunde genommen und das tut richtig weh. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, dass ich meine persönlichen Kontakte auf X, anschreiben und ihnen erklären kann, was mir passiert ist und warum ich nichts mehr sage? LG, Katja

Weirdly, I can't follow you on my home mastodon instance though (mas.to), because it says you're suspended. Do you know why? I see you on mastodon.social, but if I migrated there, it looks like I wouldn't be able to follow bird.makeup accounts (at least, I don't see them when I search).
