Massive f*cking block of text incoming, you have been warned. Tried to post this to the James Lee Reddit page, but ran into some issues, so I don't know where else to put this, but I have an idea for an unconventional movie project using his style. I think the animation style used by James Lee is perfect for a "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit" styled cultivation story. Specifically the blending of animation and live action. For those unfamiliar with the Cultivator subgenre of progression fantasy here's a good description shamelessly stolen from wikipedia: Cultivation (variously referred to in Chinese as xiūliàn [修炼], xiūzhēn [修真], xiūxíng [修行], and xiūxiān [修仙]) is a Taoist concept by which humans can extend their lifespan and gain supernatural powers through practicing a set of martial and mystical arts involving meditation and the cultivation of Qi. In many novels, the ultimate goal of cultivation is to become an immortal and attain godhood. The "Cultivating Method" could comprise martial arts, Buddhism, or Taoism depending on the doctrine of different religions. And since cultivation stories are usually set in a wold where might makes right and the guys with the biggest sticks can kick mountains into space because they feel like it. Having a story set in a grungy city full of crappy magi-tech would fit James's style perfectly. The premise is that there's a sliding scale as people have more kung fu powers. Mortals and those just stepping on the path of cultivation are portrayed by actors and martial artists. Those who are in the process of becoming true cultivators are in that half-animated state with that unreality that James's style excels at. Peak masters are fully animated, toon style but anime. Why go through all this trouble? Because this would allow for something never done before as a very useful bit of visual shorthand. The whole reason for using James's visual style is because it lets the audience "see" Qi. Is the person the main character's father animated in the flashbacks? we now know he was a cultivator. Is that crusty old sword the MC found a real life sword or an animated one? Or, is it in that weird half and half style again, so it's subtle. There's also the concept of 'hiding your aura' so characters that go from animated to live action can show them calming down or hiding. While going to live action to animated can be someone revealing themselves. Since demonic cultivators pop up quite often in these stories and usually have to hide. The half and half style could show how they are hiding their power and give them some extra creep factor. I think a project like this would benefit greatly from his style and I would be interested to know what the man himself would think about this. TL;DR: I think this style would make for a really great magic kung fu movie, but for more reasons than just the action looking better.
