Video Vault: Q&A Part 1 (Acting and Movement)

Regular James here.

This is the first in a multi part series where I'll be discussing various aspects of Nox, and the thought process behind his creation. I'll be dropping more of these over the next month.

This week I'm talking about acting and movement. None of this is to be treated as gospel, just my 2 cents from doin this shit over the years.

If you have any questions or anything you'd like me to detail in further video, let me know in the comments below!

I love these videos so much oh my god.

Zaika

In my view the difference between the tiktok style and the current Nox is that the former has a more exaggerated movements and expressions meant to draw the viewers attention to them, while Nox's current style is more restricted/subdued but emphatic. They impart meaning to his words, and accentuate his character rather than trying to be flashy. Love this kind of deep dive into the creation of the character and how you style his movements.

Andrew Noel

I loved the breakdown of the character's movement and how you've changed them over time. Thank you for sharing!

Blackerst

Argghhhh this is so cool!! I want to take inspiration from your work for university so this is really informative and useful!

MipiMipy

Love this! I second @garpocalypse that this is exactly what makes Patreon special. Seeing your thinking behind things gives me great data about process, and increases my overall artistic intuition. Keep it up!

@ericdirector

Oh my god this was amazing!!! I love hearing about your creative process, I definitely would love to see more and thank you for making even your behind the scenes videos so damn entertaining!!

Raymond

Ooh, this is some helpful insight! I'd love to see some stuff about sound design in the next one if you make it. Keep rockin on, Planet Nox.

Slip_VA

I use the liquify tool in After Effects to push the expressions

A question i have, is do you manually edit the NoX face to stretch and morph, or are you using some sort of custom filter you apply to the video?

Jack_Wolfe

This is awesome! Please do more of these! It’s really cool to hear your thoughts on this!

Andy Livengood

I think this was absolutely fascinating to listen to. Thanks for making this! I'm looking forward to the next parts. :D

ebyscoots

I fucking LOVE behind the scenes stuff. It helps my brain have ideas.

Jack_Wolfe

i'd settle for a nox tutorial series on flash. so far "right click and create a motion tween" is all we have.

Garpocalypse

Yeah for sure, the movement pattern is pretty similar to the Robot, or at least how I understand it

James Lee Animation

1:46 thats very fun.

Jack_Wolfe

Its essentially "ramping" classic kungfu movie impact stuff.

Jack_Wolfe

now this is what i joined the patreon for. much appreciated.

Garpocalypse

I think what you may have been trying to say is that Nox’s movements are “deliberate”. Like, nothing is haphazard, every movement he makes is with a purpose, which is why they’re so mechanical in a way. It’s almost like acting while doing “the robot”. I definitely see a massive difference between how something like the Logan Paul is acted versus your Adobe video. Refinement is the key, and you’ve done a great job of it.

Shawn Holmes

It’s really cool seeing your process and how you act out Nox! I probably wouldn’t have noticed the “tiktok” movement of the older videos if you hadn’t pointed it out lol

SkeleTrain

I love the idea of the movements being like going between key frames, it's so fun!! Nox has such a bitchin aesthetic, I love it! Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down and break down the process of creating this for us <3

Zed

This is exactly the kind of thing i hoped you would post on your patreon. Amazing!

Sebbir Visuals

Is it time to give a full nox tutorial, editing and producing
