Everything about Johan is so surreal that for Lunge (who is accustomed to deal with real people) he could only be the product of someone's imagination. This is why up to this point his "double personality" thesis was only getting *reinforced* instead of diluted. The real catch is that in a sense Lunge was never wrong in his conclusion, because to a large extent Johan IS a product of someone's imagination (he is the Monster with no name from the tale). What Lunge's rational mind had so far refused to consider is that such a fantastic beast could transcend the pages of a book and leap into material reality. That is why the room scene is so important! (so much so that I cannot fully disclose why it's so important without getting into spoiler territory).
