2023-09-10 17:44:16 +0000 UTCHe ended up being a disappointment as Littlefinger, although I think a lot of that falls on direction and writing, since he's clearly a talented actor. Littlefinger was written as a cunning man who used the veneer of his humble birth and stature to manipulate those with more power and prestige, something he was able to do largely unimpeded because he was persistently underestimated. In the show he's presented as a supercilious schemer who is so overt with his ambitions and mustache twirling that even the most trusting of souls would have been forced to view him with overwhelming suspicion. It was scenery chewing of the highest order, and along with Tyrion, Bronn, Renly, Loras and Catelyn was one of the worst translations of a character from page to screen in the otherwise reasonably faithful early seasons.

2023-09-10 02:37:13 +0000 UTCWhat a beautiful reaction, thank you. Another excellent and throughly satisfying season of The Wire “If it’s a lie then we fight on that lie.” - Slim Charles. This is a reference to the events leading to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 - a war which was fought on the lie of the existence of WMDs. In fact, S3 contains several parallels and references to the Iraq War and the so-called “War on Terror”. The season aired in 2004 so these references felt very acute at the time. “Get on with it, motherfucker.” - Bunny’s last words at the COMSTAT meeting mirrored Stringer’s final words before he was killed by Brother Mouzone and Omar. The two men trying to reform the drug game and policing bowed out with the same words. Speaking of Omar... he looked pretty disappointed when he saw Dante. Brandon was tortured in S1 but never gave Omar up. Meanwhile Dante had only a few cuts and bruises and gave Omar up to Mouzone. Not a good look for their relationship. Interesting how the opening scene of the season started with the towers being destroyed (another “War on Terror” reference); and the final scene saw with the rubble and wreckage of Hamsterdam. Immensely looking forward to Season 4.

2023-09-10 02:25:56 +0000 UTCSeason 4 is about something you are not expecting hahaha but I can tell now Lola is gonna have hard time with season 4. About the ending of this season, it does feel like the conclusion of the show but I’m glad HBO decided to continue with this show.

It’s not a spoiler to say that my ranking of seasons, best to least best, is 4, 3, 2, 1, 5 (with 4 and 3 being a virtual tie). I envy you for getting to see the next two seasons for the first time. Enjoy!

2023-09-10 01:27:59 +0000 UTCI'm ashamed to say that upon my initial viewing, I was one of the dolts who fell hook-line-and-sinker for Carcetti's speech. I think this was partially due to expecting him to have a change of heart and to be a 'redeemable politician' character for the show. But in all honesty, a lot more came from me being swept up by the emotional weight of the speech itself. This is why I'm so grateful to have this channel, especially for shows as nuanced as this. The girls weren't caught off guard for one second, they saw through his bs like they were looking through a window throughout that entire scene. Ed Burns (co-creator) gave his thoughts of the speech, in an interview on NPR, which I'll post and link below: "I remember at the end of the third season, when he was still a councilman, we had Carcetti give an impassioned speech, and the camera gently panned in on him as he rhapsodized about saving neighborhoods and demanding better for the city. And it really was a beautiful speech. And you know, the writers worked on it for a long while. And yet, everything about the speech was just a recall and a retread of the drug war. And he was arguing for more warfare. And whereas, the whole of the third season had shown this police commander trying to struggle with it on pragmatic and practical terms, in terms of Bunny Colvin. And I was amazed to find that a lot of viewers, you know, longtime viewers, had watched that episode and they followed Carcetti right off the cliff. They were, despite what they had been shown for 12 episodes in terms of the box that the drug war is, they thought he was the solution, because he sounded like the solution. And that taught me a lot, you know, I kind of went all "Candide" on myself. They really hone in on how Carcetti’s opportunistic behavior is emblematic of most politicians Bunny’s line last episode about trusting the word of an openly racist man over anyone in government really hurts. It’s fitting that the last conversation he had with someone in the season was Bubs, someone who saw the horrors of a failed system more than any other character in the show

It's just that they shouldn't be wielded by people like Prez in that line of work, and that they shouldn't be used willy-nilly. There better be justification for their use.

This is honestly one of the first things I bring up when recommending the show A lot of people hear about Omar and get the wrong idea that the show is gonna have a focus on spectacle rather than grounded reality and social commentary

2023-09-10 00:58:36 +0000 UTCWhat I find interesting, personally, it's the shooting from the police side: no policeman shot one in this series even once till the end of the season 3, but Prez. And every time he did it... it was a huge mistake. Interesting idea, that shows us that no guns is really needed to prevent criminal activity, and the guns is basically just exists as an instrument of intimidating.

On the surface, Slim shouldn't be likeable, he's an enforcer for one of the biggest, most violent criminal gangs in the city and is completely fine with killing people. However, he also has all the hallmarks of some you respect because he's honest, he's competent, he's loyal, he's not needlessly cruel, and he's also smart. He has just the perfect amount of everything for self-preservation and moving up in the criminal world.
