Added 2024-09-22 05:09:46 +0000 UTCI started this cartoon towards the beginning of summer camp and finished it just in time for the beginning of fall classes. Have I mentioned that drawing multiple panels and picking contemporary hair/outfits adds exponential drawing time to a Becky-comic?
I have some big news: It turns out that this was my last newsletter comic for the children's theater. A week and a half ago, I was laid off due to budget cuts. I'll be okay for a few months, so I'm looking at it as a surprise art residency. I've been meaning to put together a print collection of the newsletter cartoons for years, but I didn't have the brainspace to lay out a book and run a crowdfund. Once I realized that I would no longer be holding things like pending birthday party reservations and field trip dates in my head, I felt unbelievably free! I still have that work-dream where a field trip group arrives before we're ready for them and I'm suddenly not wearing any clothes, but what can you do.
I have a lot of decisions coming up: How many pages can the book be, while staying reasonably priced? Which of the newsletter cartoons will make it in? (I think there are ~400 of them, and some of the early ones are JUST OKAY.) If the book is sized for the 4x6" postcard cartoons, how do I include the half-dozen full-pagers? Do I include some unofficial cartoons that took place at the theater (for example, a cartoon about watching the theater-teens perform Falsettos while Shoulder Angel worriedly makes a list of things in the play that a conservative school board type would object to)?
I'm looking forward to figuring all that stuff out in the next couple of months. I'll keep you posted!
