Book 1, Page 107 (End of Issue 4!)

I laughed SO hard while I was drawing this page! Poor Tammy.

I just looked at some earlier drafts, and wow, I'd forgotten how many tries it took to nail down everyone's poses and iron out the pacing! The Photoshop layers all have names like "panel 1 Lillian pose version 3."

Here are two earlier drafts of the page. The first one has completely different pacing, and a penultimate panel that mirrors the very first page, with a front view of Lillian's house.

This draft is pretty close to the final page. (I did change Lillian's pose in panel 1, after taking a bunch of "creakily get out of a chair" reference selfies.) I copy-pasted the table from an earlier page, just to save time. At that point, I needed to finish the digital drawings and get to the pen-and-ink phase ASAP in order to have Issue 4 ready for DiNK!

This week, Naomi and I are getting ready to fly to New York City for the Queers and Comics conference! We're both speaking this weekend. Naomi is on a panel called "Robot Love is Queer: Synthetic Bodies and Authentic Experiences," and I'm moderating a panel about "Creating Queer Historical Comics." Our historical comics vary from biography to 1990s autobio to magical Victorian intrigue/horror, so it should be an interesting time! We're planning to record the panel, so I'll let you know if/when it's uploaded somewhere.

Also, if you're in NYC, you're invited to:
Queer Comix Live!
May 16, 7:00 – 8:30pm
380 Second Avenue, 7th floor
Free and open to the public

Naomi will be reading from her webcomic, Moonsprout Station, and I'll be reading a goofy autobio story starring my tiny sidekick, Shoulder Angel!

Naomi and I will be traveling to Chicago for CAKE after that, so there will be 2-3 weeks of hiatus before Issue 5 starts updating. Thanks, as always, for your support, whether I'm in creative-mode or salesperson/publicist-mode!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I fondly remember the excitement of being 10 and finding a behind-the-scenes section in a Calvin & Hobbes collection, or being new to making comics and finding a really great online tutorial. Just trying to pay it forward :D

And I think we can all identify with Tammy!

It’s really fun — and educational — to see the creative process. Thanks for sharing it!
