Becky here! Welcome to The Rabbit Hole. I was surprised when Barry's script called for "a closed door with a crude drawing of Tenniel’s version of the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland." But The Rabbit Hole is based on a real location in New York City!

From c.1916-1930, there was a basement tearoom called The Mad Hatter, which was co-owned by Eliza “Jimmie” Criswell and her partner Mathilda Spence. The tearoom had characters from Alice in Wonderland painted on the walls, and that image was too cool not to use. Later on (1945-1970), the first floor of the building became The Pony Stable Inn, a Greenwich Village lesbian bar. (Audre Lorde frequented The Pony Stable Inn, and talks about the bar scene in Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, which I 100% recommend reading!)

You can see in the Mad Hatter photo that there's a quote from Alice in Wonderland painted along with the characters. I didn't have nearly the space or inclination to fit "We're all mad here. I'm mad, you're mad. You must be or you wouldn't have come here" into this panel. But I thought the caterpillar's iconic question--"Who are you?"--was a wonderfully appropriate touch.

Thanks again for supporting this comic!
