With Adric I think it's a fair point that the Doctor just wasn't proficient enough with the TARDIS ti materialize around a moving object that she would be able to do after several thousand more years of practice. A lot of people treat the Doctor as static in her intelligence and skills, ironic since everything else is so fluid, but it's not surprising that later Doctors are more effective because they have far more experience.
