A clear emphasis was put on making every story different from the previous one. 'The Mind Robber' is completely different from 'The Dominators'. 'The Invasion' is completely different from 'The Mind Robber' and so on.

The season 6 stories are more varied that's true.

I just finished watching the FL and I think you guys enjoyed it? Your reaction to Jarvis' death was quite funny honestly. I don't blame you for not having any sympathy for him, he's just a much worse version of Robson imo. With Robson, they went through the effort of explaining his reasons behind his actions. The fact that the gas rig was supplying gas to the whole of south England and Wales etc. With Jarvis, no such effort is put in. He's just stubborn for the sake of it. I suppose the mental illness was interesting, but even that feels like an inferior copy of what they did with Robson in the last story. I also have to admit that there have been a lot of these stubborn leader characters lately. With that being said, I'd also argue most of them have been written well and have been given good reasons for acting the way they do. Clent with his over reliance on computers, Robson not wanting to turn off the gas supply for the reasons I've already mentioned etc. Jarvis is the only big exception. All these characters have the same function within the plot, to be an obstacle for the Doctor to overcome. However, the reasons behind their actions are always different, which helps to make them feel different enough from one another. That still doesn't change the fact that we've had a lot of these types of characters in the last two seasons though. I admit that is a bit of a problem. It's a good thing then that there's not really any of these sorts of characters in the next season that I can think of. There's also just one base under siege story next season. As consistently great as season 5 was, there was a need to freshen things up. They do that in season 6 and I think they do it pretty well.
