I think that sums up the Chibnall era. He's not a talented writer nor showrunner; but he can sometimes produce entertaining stories,even though they're never more than average. As such,average has become the new 'good'.

2021-03-31 21:31:45 +0000 UTCMy opinion of this episode. The actual Dalek plot is good, until the way it's defeated which is far too comical. The character moments like the ones between Ryan and his Dad kept on disrupting the flow of the episode, mostly because the characters have been so poorly developed it's hard to care that much. RTD and even Moffat to some extent knew how to tie in the character drama with the main plot of the story and the transitions between the two feel natural. Chibnall makes them feel very jarring. Overall, this episode is aggressively mediocre, but it would still be one of the better S11 episodes which says it all about the quality of that series.

2021-03-31 21:30:08 +0000 UTCAlex, I think you've been on a similar journey to us. You liked a lot of the early episodes this season, and there really were some great ones. But the season as a whole eventually wore you down down like some of us, I kinda liked this episode, it definitely wasn't amazing, yes it was simple, but it was like a rare 'decent' amongst many 'meh' that I think I always elevate it to a ' not bad actually' in the scheme of the season.
