Actually you probably remember the Pope from Turn Left, he played Rocco Colasanto the Italian dude Donna, Sylvia and Wilf lived with as refugees who got sent to a concentration camp. Everybody knows about the Doctor he's the worst kept secret in human history. After-all, he is the unanimously selected President of the World by the UN in the 21st Century. The Veritas only exits in the Shadow World. Also Nardole isn't a robot he's a cyborg, his head is organic. The problem with transferring regen energy externally is that it's incredibly inefficient, for instance healing River's wrist would take much more energy than it would take for a regenerating Time Lord to heal their own wrist. Penny was likely feeling guilty about getting into a same-sex relationship, we can assume she's not fully out, and when the pope recognizably popped out of Bill's bedroom that's pretty clear divine intervention to stop before going any further.
