The Doctor's ring is likely the wedding ring of the first looming of the Time Lord known as the Doctor, the one who would travel back in Gallifrey's timeline, become a Time Lord founder known as the Other, having 13 children(Susan being the daughter of the oldest son) and ultimately throw himself into the looms to be re-loomed as the First Doctor, the ring possibly coming back into his possession as a graduation gift from the Time Lord Academy. My personal headcanon believes that the crystal from the ring becomes a primary power source for at least the first run of Sonic Screwdrivers at least until his fifth incarnation, possibly all the way up until the Eleventh Doctor's sonic is provided by the TARDIS.

Hypothesized to be amnesiac uber-powerful reincarnations of the Time Lords that existed in the universe prior to this one, the second universe. They may or may not have been called Archons and space was green instead of black.
