Ned's older brother Brandon was originally betrothed to Catelyn, but upon his death the arrangement passed to Eddard. Also if you notice, the person training Ned and Benjen was a younger Ser Rodrick, whiskers and all. Benjen's reason for joining the Night's Watch is never explicit, but one could assume that the reverence the houses of the North and especially the Starks have for the NW, as a younger son he probably just joined for lack of other options and to make a difference in slowing its decline. Euron Greyjoy was exiled years ago following the Greyjoy Rebellion, and now he has returned home.
