If Davison's your second favourite Doctor, then who's your favourite?

2019-03-28 18:53:30 +0000 UTCHe actually is wearing a cricket uniform, and this probably isn't the best story to start Five on. It used to be pretty universally disliked, but it's based on Australian colonialism and Buddhism, which is where a lot of the Mara stuff and the themes come from. Five is probably the least take-charge Doctor and most overtly good-natured, and that coupled with his large crew often tends to cause things to spiral out of control, which leads to a lot of tragedy and trouble for him. In response, Six is one of the most in-your-face, I love the subconscious causality between each Doctor's personality. Five is actually my second favorite Doctor. The next story, Vengeance on Varos is probably my favorite Six story, look at it as a meta take on Doctor Who itself and television in general.

When this was first broadcast,it was voted 'worst story' of the season by the fans - but has since grown in stature,and is now regarded as one of the most intriguing of Davison's stories. It certainly isn't representative of the 5th Doctors era;but it's a story that grows on repeated viewing. It's worth bearing in mind that not all Classic stories followed the general trend of New Who's more straightforward style of storytelling. Next week,you have a story that's arguably the opposite of this: a straight down the line tale that hits subtelty over the head with a hammer (but that's #6 for you).
