This was actually such a great watch! It was a story with a lot of substance and a lot to learn from while still being lots of fun! I had a great time watching :)

2023-11-29 04:37:03 +0000 UTCThanks so much for doing this! I hadn’t seen the movie in ages. It was great fun to rewatch with you! I’m with you on the coach meeting them at the airport. They really didn’t need that romantic ending. I guess the one value of it is to show her parents’ potential acceptance of her marrying a non-Indian man. But it wasn’t necessary. Her choice to be a soccer player was the important part. At the time, Bend it Like Beckham was the highest grossing soccer movie in the U.S. I’m sure others have surpassed it by now. The U.S. had hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999, a few years before this movie. Overnight, women’s soccer got really big in the U.S. The stadiums were full. I remember seeing all these little girls in the stands screaming and cheering for Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain. It was wonderful! Of course, the U.S. won that year and Brandi Chastain’s iconic picture on her knees, jersey in hand, after making the penalty kick that won it all was on the cover of every newspaper and magazine.
