The idea was that the man would get dumped on standing on the outside. Think of the trajectory if someone is dumping something out the window. They're not gonna dump it straight down against the wall. It would have a little bit of a sling to it, and would land generally more on the outer edge of the walkway. ;) Works for passing carriages, too. :P

If the woman was on the building side, the man was protected from getting dumped on. Though I suppose he could claim it was to keep the woman from getting splashed by passing carriages, lol.
