Ive never thought about this, but you are correct! I've seen people say she's a bad friend and that always bothered me because I don't think she's a bad friend at all - I can see where she's a bad communicator though.

2025-06-29 17:37:14 +0000 UTCI know why Buffy didn't tell Dawn straightaway about what the principal said, and it's a consistent theme. As competent as Buffy is as a slayer, as good of a friend as she is, one of her big human flaws is that she isn't good at communication. We saw it from the very first season, when she would jump to conclusions about Angel and Cordelia and immediately turn to leave instead of trying to find out what was really going on. Then there was season 2 when Buffy was acting out after summer because of her trauma with the Master, and she couldn't...wouldn't talk about it, until she smashed the Master's bones and worked it out (she never did really talk about what was bothering her either). It continued on through season 3 when she took off for L.A. without a word to anyone, never even let friends and family knows she was alive (presumably not even her father who actually lived in L.A.). Nor would she talk about it when she returned, until Giles tricked her into saying what was wrong. Then she jumped to conclusions about Angel and Faith, and Willow had to tell her point-blank, TALK to Angel about it. But instead, Buffy hoped to use her temporary mind-reading ability instead of talking to him, trying to find an easy way that didn't involve real emotion and heavy conversation. On and on through the seasons, and now we're at season 5, and the Riley situation (which, TBF, was a lot to do with his own inability to communicate and his raging insecurities, so that was not a one-sided problem). So yeah, Buffy not telling Dawn until much later is very consistent with Buffy's communication flaw. The writers have been delightfully consistent with this. It makes Buffy all the more human. She isn't perfect.
