The idea that many of the stars that we see have exploded before their light has reached us is not really true. The farthest star that can be seen with the naked eye is V762 Cassiopeiae abut 16,000 light years away. Star's lifetimes are billions of years so the number of stars we can see that may have already ended is small. Everybody pretty much knows about Betelguese 640 light years away. There are a few others: Ete Carinae about 7500 years away. VY Canis Majoris and Rho Cassiopeiae as well.

This episode is the only episode of television I've seen where it grasps that concept and handles it in a way that feels so familiar to me. I have absolutely been Buffy, having a breakdown while doing chores after witnessing something my grandfather say or do something that reminded me just how bad it had gotten Awful Monster of the Week aside, I really do appreciate this episode. While it does hurt, the real world aspects of it feel like they come from somebody who has been through what Buffy, I, and countless other people have been through when having to care for a loved one who slowly "loses their mind" for lack of a better term
