I'm a bit late but I might as well go for it... It's also important to note that one of the biggest things Angel looks for in the people he has in his life is "Are you willing to kill me if it comes to that?" and if that person isn't willing to kill him or if he thinks they can't kill/stop him, he kind of distances himself from them, sends them away, or doesn't really get close to them. It's very interesting to watch when examining Angel's core and vital relationships. We see it here in this episode with Cordy (she passes) and in the "I've Got You Under My Skin" episode with Wes (he passes). Buffy sometimes passes and sometimes doesn't, interestingly. It is a vital component of whether Angel will become close to someone after everything that happened in S2 of BTVS.

However, it's in Cordelia's nature to say or think the first thing that comes to her mind, lol. She's smart but I feel her character can be too literal at times. I love the contrast Cordelia/Wesley brings to the already darker show.

I think she just has seen both sides of Angel - Angel and Angelus - and she knows it's possible for him to turn on a dime, and what he's capable of if he does. She is fiercely protective of Angel, and also ready to take him out in a heartbeat if needed. I don't think these two facts conflict at all. :P
