I've gradually come to the same conclusion myself. I know Xander is far from perfect but that just makes him more believable to me and I could never see why some people dislike him so much. It's got to be a generational thing.

Hold on...did Buffy get drowned and came back...again? Another Slayer coming?

I think it's your age that makes you sour on Xander. I find most younger people are. Those of us that are older and watched the show live might feel differently. Or at least I do. Mainly for several reasons: 1. He was reprensative of the average teen guy at this time. Very representative. Most dudes acted just like him. And since I can't despise all the dudes I grew up around....I don't dislike Xander. 2. People's humor was different back then. Heck it basically a constant game of insults with your closest friends. People we never just nice to each other. It was all sarcasm. Usually the jokes were mostly bullshit, but with tiny slivers of truth buried in there. Basically exactly like all the comments Xander makes. Honestly I'm still like this with my friends today. It's just how we all grew up. The climate today and the humor is VERY different, so I get why he isn't appealing to younger people. Still, I just can't dislike Xander.

After this season is concluded, check YouTube for the Season 3 bloopers. Can't do it yet because of spoilers. But it's worth watching, just for yourself, no reaction needed. The blooper with Balthazar gets me giggling every time. Also check out the fan-wiki page for Season 3 to get a lot more info re certain villains and background, but again, not until after the season is finished so that nothing is spoiled. For now, just remember the things that Balthazar said. That's all I will say there.

What's crazy is that Alexis (Wesley) is American. Both him and James (Spike) can pull off amazing English accents.

After many, many re-watches and as now a grown-ass older adult (well, chronologically speaking anyway), while I still like Xander as a character overall, my feelings have shifted in a more sour way of looking at him. Especially in light of a more modern POV. I would sum him up thus: Xander is well-meaning, good-hearted, and courageous/protective when the back is to the wall, but he is highly immature. I actually think he is a very well written portrayal of a 17-year-old boy who probably doesn't have a strong family supporting him, which we can surmise from what Cordelia said about Xander's "drunken family fights" during the holidays. Maybe a bit of a leap there as we don't have any other information, but it's at least a red flag that his family isn't the best at being supporting and nurturing, much as we discovered with Willow's home life as well, though in a different way. So basically, I think Xander is actually realistically written for the most part, an immature, average IQ, 17-year-old hormone-bomb boy in the late '90s/early 2000s. In short, I get very exasperated with Xander and his antics, but I don't hate the character.
