In this instance it was the impending apocolypse that was the side story, not Xander's. That's the whole point of the episode and that's okay with me because I don't have an obsessive hatred of Xander like some people seem to.

However, it is very funny how you have such a serious storyline with the apocalypse. Then you have Xander's dumb ass getting himself into hijinks, which ultimately ends up having him "also" save the day. I usually skip this episode but I do think it's silly juxtaposition.
